At last, after a week of silence, I heard my father’s voice. It broke through the fear, a familiar warmth weaving its way back into my world. Days have stretched like shadows, filled with worry and longing, as I waited for news of their safety after the flood. We learned they were alive and safe, though their home bore scars—no power, no water, no cell service—but they had weathered the storm. Watching from afar as our communities have been reshaped by devastation has been a challenge that has weighed heavily upon my heart. When he called yesterday, a swell of emotion rose within me, tears gathering at the edges of my being just seeing the incoming call.And then, as his voice filled the air, it became the sweetest music I have ever known. In that moment, I was swept away by a tide of feelings—relief, gratitude, love, joy, sadness, grief—all intertwined. How to hold such complexity at once? As we navigate these waves of sorrow and solace together, may we remain gracious, compassionate, and understanding. Our homelands are forever changed, taking on a new shape that reflects not just the scars of loss, but also a profound sense of deeper community care. In this resilience, we find connections that bind us more closely, nurturing a spirit of solidarity and support that transforms our shared experience into something beautiful and enduring. Let us carry this sense of community with us, forward into the future, forever and always, as a testament to our shared strength and enduring love.

The heart of Appalachian culture & community beats in these backroads, rivers, creeks, & secluded towns. It’s part of our magic, our charm—what draws so many to visit these majestic mountains that I’m lucky & damn proud to call home. I grew up in these small mountain towns, tromping along these magical backroads in a region where the population is small but hearts are huge. It’s a place where you know everyone in town, & helping each other is simply what you do—no questions asked. But now, our cherished communities are facing an unimaginable challenge. What they are calling a “biblical” flood has swept through, devastating the very fabric of our communities, cutting them off from the rest of the region. Homes have been lost, livelihoods shattered, & precious lives extinguished far too soon. Yet, even in the face of such adversity, the spirit of Appalachia shines brightly. Neighbors are stepping up, supporting one another with unwavering resolve. People are opening their doors, sharing what little they have, & rallying to help each other in any way possible. Many are going out to search for those unaccounted for, doing wellness checks on friends & loved ones that families haven’t heard from. This is the essence of our community—coming together in times of need, just as we always have. Still, it’s devastating & heartbreaking to be away from it all, unable to lend a hand or share in the struggle & resilience that define us. I ache to be there, to support my family, my friends, & my neighbors during this challenging time. We may not make the big news, but please don’t forget about us. It’s a stark reminder that while the heart of Appalachia beats strong, the distance feels heavy. We must stand together, even from afar, & find ways to lift these resilient towns as they navigate this hardship, proving that the spirit of our home will always endure through love & unity. Together we will navigate this journey, not unscathed, but with bigger hearts & a renewed appreciation for what we hold dear. In this shared resilience we’ll rediscover strength & connection, emerging not just as individuals, but as a community bound by hope & understanding.

Move beyond the surface of the chakras & find out how to work with your energy body to bring balance in order to harness your power & connect to your true Self. I’m excited to bring back the Sowing Sacred Seeds Chakra Series, held both online & in person at @ashevillecommunityyoga starting in the new year. We will utilize a systematic & artful approach to work with the chakra system utilizing asana, pranayama, mantra, meditation, mudra, journaling, home rituals, as well as communal ceremonies. In the coming weeks let’s explore each chakra! The Root Chakra, or Mūlādhāra, serves as the foundation of the energy body, situated at the base of the astral spine and the pelvis. This essential chakra is key to our sense of security and governs our basic needs. Physically it is connected with:

🔻 The hip joints
🔻 The feet and ankles
🔻 The bones
🔻 Process of elimination
🔻 The immune system
🔻 Sense of smell The Root Chakra is associated with:
🔻 Groundedness
🔻 Concentration
🔻 Safety & security
🔻 Health of the Physical Body (Anamaya Kosha)
🔻 Relationship to food
🔻 Relationship to ancestors & our biological family as well as our tribe & religion This foundational chakra is associated with the element of Earth 🌎 , fostering a sense of connection, support, and grounding in Mother Earth, which meets our fundamental needs. Imbalances in the Root Chakra may present as:
🔻 Feeling disconnected from the body
🔻 Fear & anxiety
🔻 Unable to set clear boundaries
🔻 Heavy energetically
🔻 Feeling stuck, stagnant
🔻 Depression & lethargy
🔻 Fixation on material things
🔻 Inability to let things go, clinging & gripping to control As we begin to engage with the chakra system, it’s essential to approach it systematically, starting with the foundational chakras related to worldly matters before progressing to the higher chakras that focus on spiritual aspects. During this series we’ll work with a traditional Vedic Ancestral Healing Ritual for our Paternal Lineage harnessing the energy of the New Moon 🌑 to support us with our work in balancing Muladhara Chakra. @helpinghandsforindia envisions a future where ancient wisdom and modern ideas work to create a better world for the children and villages from where they come.
